Bedtime stories for toddlers: calm picture books for ages 2–6
The best bedtime stories for toddlers are short, rhythmic picture books with a warm, familiar world and a calm ending. Classics such as Goodnight Moon, Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear? and Guess How Much I Love You work because they wind down rather than wind up.
Honest disclosure: this guide is written by the publisher of the A Bentley Story books, so one book on it is ours and is clearly marked. Every other book is an independent pick by well-known authors and publishers. Nobody paid to be included, and there are no affiliate links on this site.
What to look for
- A calm ending: the last pages should be quiet, cosy and safe, never a cliffhanger.
- Rhythm and repetition: a repeated line gives little ones something to join in with every night.
- Short enough to finish: for 2–3 year olds, 5–10 minutes of reading is plenty.
- Gentle stakes: a small problem, kindly solved.
- Soft pictures: warm colours and plenty to spot, without being busy or loud.
Our picks
- Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Clement Hurd. The classic going-to-bed book: a little bunny says goodnight to everything in the great green room. Ideal from age 1–2.
- Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear? by Martin Waddell, illustrated by Barbara Firth. Big Bear helps Little Bear with his fear of the dark. Reassuring and gentle for ages 2–5.
- Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney, illustrated by Anita Jeram. Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare try to measure their love. A snuggly last story.
- Peace at Last by Jill Murphy. Mr Bear cannot get to sleep anywhere in the house. Funny, repetitive and perfect for joining in.
- Owl Babies by Martin Waddell, illustrated by Patrick Benson. Three baby owls wait for their mother to come back. A comforting story about parents always returning.
- The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton. A silly, rhythmic board book about animals getting ready for bed on a boat. Great for 1–3 year olds.
- Time for Bed by Mem Fox, illustrated by Jane Dyer. Gentle rhyming goodnights from animal parents to their babies.
- Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. Baby Llama frets when Mama leaves the room. Rhyming and reassuring for ages 2–5.
- Whatever Next! by Jill Murphy. Baby Bear flies to the moon in a cardboard box and is home in time for his bath. Imaginative but calm.
- Kipper by Mick Inkpen. Kipper the dog is tired of his old basket and tries sleeping somewhere new. Funny and cosy for ages 2–5.
- Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by Lynley Dodd. A rhyming romp with a scruffy little dog and his friends, a favourite to read aloud again and again.
- Bentley and the Big Snow Day by A. W. Bren (our book). A cosy Christmas Eve snow-day story about a big, fluffy family dog and a snowman who keeps losing his carrot nose. Funny in the middle, calm at the end, with a join-in “wag, wag, wag!”

Questions parents ask
What is a good bedtime story for a 2 year old?
Choose a short, rhythmic book with a calm ending and a familiar world, such as Goodnight Moon, The Going to Bed Book or Owl Babies. At two, repetition matters more than plot.
What is a good bedtime story for a 3 or 4 year old?
Three and four year olds enjoy a small, gentle story with a character they love, such as Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear?, Peace at Last, Kipper or Bentley and the Big Snow Day, as long as it ends quietly.
How long should a toddler bedtime story be?
Around 5 to 10 minutes of reading is plenty for most toddlers and preschoolers. Most picture books are 32 pages and fit comfortably in that time.
Is it OK to read the same bedtime story every night?
Yes. Repetition is comforting and helps language development. Many children ask for the same favourite for weeks.
